Homewood Community Amenities

There's plenty to do in and around the Homewood community. The neighborhood owns and manages seven public parks, including Patriot Park and Overton Park. It's easy to get around Homewood, given the city's compact size. I-65 connects the city to downtown Birmingham to the north and Montgomery to the south. In addition, the Birmingham Transit Authority provides public bus service between Homewood and points throughout Jefferson County. For trips outside of the region, Birmingham's Shuttlesworth International Airport is less than an hour's drive away from the neighborhood.

The greater Birmingham area is home to a number of festive community annual events. Nearby McCalla hosts the Appalachian Dulcimer Festival each summer. Birmingham comes alive each August with the Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival, and book enthusiasts flock to the area each spring for Alabama Bound, the region's largest book festival.

There's no lack of cultural activities in central Alabama. Birmingham is home to the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, the historic Carver Theater, the McWane Science Center and the Talladega Superspeedway, just to name a few attractions near the neighborhood.

Homewood residents need never go hungry. This Birmingham suburb offers a diverse array of coffee houses, delis and restaurants. Among the local favorites are Saw's BBQ, Gianmarco's for Italian food, Red Pearl for southeast Asian cuisine and Okinawa for sushi and Japanese fare.

Homewood Neighborhood Schools

School age residents in the Homewood neighborhood attend Homewood public schools. The district, which has an enrollment of around 1,400 students, owns and manages five schools--three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. In addition to the public schools, there are a number of private schools in the community. These include Glen Iris Baptist School, Altamont School and Advent Episcopal School. For post-secondary education, Homewood is home to Samford University, a well-regarded private university. In addition, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is located just a few miles north of the city.
